Pledgeship

One of the most publicized aspects of fraternity life is pledgeship. The hazing so popularly depicted in the movie "Animal House" and shows on MTA, was outlawed by Delta Tau Delta years ago. Nobody likes stereotypes, but unfortunately media portrayals of Greek life are not accurate. In reality, fraternities are value-based organizations dedicated to the development of character and lifelong friendship. Hazing is gone and a different type of pledgeship has evolved.
New fraternity members typically experience a period of orientation lasting 8 weeks. During this time, you and the other new members will participate in weekly meetings to learn about the University and the Fraternity. In Delta Tau Delta this is done with our leadership retreats, community service projects and activities designed to build friendships. Delta Tau Delta opposes hazing and is committed to a membership education period that teaches responsibility and commitment to new members.

"Committed to Lives of Excellence" is the mission of Delta Tau Delta. We make an agreement with out pledges that our pledge program will provide an atmosphere for academic excellence, personal growth, brotherhood and social activity. In return we ask that our pledges simply become contribution members of the Fraternity.

During pledgeship each member will be placed on a committee of their choice in areas that interest them most within the house. This enables the new members to begin the transition towards becoming active members of Delta Tau Delta. Throughout this process, academics remain a primary concern. A 2.5 minimum G.P.A. during the pledge semester is required for initiation into Delta Tau Delta. This may seem like a difficult requirement, but through academic programs established at Delta Tau Delta, thousands of men have achieved it, allowing us to be among the academic leaders at the University of Missouri.

Along with academics, pledgeship is about getting to know your active brothers and building brotherhood within the Chapter. Throughout the year new members will be encouraged to go on walk-outs together as well as participate in house events like Brothers' Week, a week solely devoted to bettering the relationships formed within the Fraternity.

Pledging Delta Tau Delta will prove to be one of the most important decisions that you will encounter in your lifetime.  Over 143,000 men have been initiated into Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. These men are doctors, lawyers, teachers, athletes, musicians, senators, businessmen, fathers, grandfathers, mentors, advisors, etc. Becoming a Delt offers you an instant connection between these men and you, a connection that could result in some phenomenal life experiences and advice.  Here are a few reasons why joining Delta Tau Delta can be one of the best decisions you can make in your lifetime.

  • Delta Tau Delta is a value driven organization, and we strive to make all of our decisions based on our mission and values. Our members live by the principles of integrity, accountability, truth and courage. Building a fraternity around these values sets forth the expectations for how the fraternity will run and the behavior in the fraternity. Bringing these values into our Brotherhood allow for personal and organizational accountability and overall excellence.
  • Delta Tau Delta is a national leader in academics. For 12 of the last 16 years, Delta Tau Delta has had the highest GPA of all national fraternities with an average GPA of 2.86. On the local level, the Mizzou Delts posted an active G.P.A. higher than the all men’s Fraternity average.  Delta Tau Delta regards academics as its number one priority and you will make better grades because you are a Delt.
  • Fraternity members achieve success. College graduates who belong to a fraternity or sorority tend to be more successful financially than other college graduates. 80% of the CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies were in fraternal organizations, as were all but two of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents for the last 100 years. Many companies have always given the hiring edge to Greeks because they know a fraternity or sorority member is much more equipped to be a success in the business world than the smartest of graduates who did not have the benefit of being in a fraternity or sorority.
  • The Delts participate in a variety of community service activities.  Though we have our fair share of fun, there is more to being in a Fraternity than socializing and partying.  Through community service, you will come to realize the importance of helping those in need, which in turn; will not only make you a better Delt, but a better human being as well.
  • Becoming a member of Delta Tau Delta means that you will form better and longer-lasting relationships with your fellow brothers. Delta Tau Delta enriches your college life through friendship with young men of similar standards and interests.  As you grow through your college career, you will find that the brotherhood which exists in Delta Tau Delta provides you with some of the best friends that you will ever have – lifelong friends!
  • The Delts will provide many new experiences for you that will better prepare you for the real world.  As a pledge, you will play a roll in the operation of the fraternity by serving on one of our Administrative Committees.  This process is essential simply for the face that it allows you to “get your feet wet,” after which you are encouraged to take on more responsibility by holding positions such as Administrative Committee chairman or Executive Committee member (i.e. President, Vice President).
  • Delta Tau Delta will provide encouragement for you to undertake activities and work that will provide personal development. Delta Tau Delta provides an environment that will stimulate growth. As a Delt, you will find a variety of ways to set yourself apart from others.
  • The Delts provide real-life training and the type of teamwork that will prepare you for your career. The overwhelming majority of successful executives have a highly-developed capacity for teamwork. We get more from ourselves when we work with others. As Delts we learn to support each other and act as a team.

Leadership

Delta Tau Delta relies on the leadership ability of its members. Without their help the Chapter would not be as strong as it is. Each member is encouraged to get involved within the Fraternity as well as on campus. Through our administrative and executive committees, members develop the personal skills prominent in the business world of today. The National Fraternity also provides many opportunities to success and become leaders. Through retreats and academies, members develop into leaders of the future.

The Delt Leadership Academy provides an academic and experiential approach to the development of leadership skills for a lifetime as well as skills useful in a chapter setting. It prepares Delts to change their world by providing the tools needed to lead, improve relationships, build more effective teams and ultimately enhance society.

Delta Tau Delta is committed to providing our members with a variety of leadership opportunities through programs such as the Delt Leadership Academy. Each year a variety of Delts apply and are accepted to the Leadership Academy. From freshmen to seniors and from chapter presidents to the recently initiated, the Leadership Academy has no prerequisites for applying. Delta Tau Delta has made it a priority to expose as many members to these programs and opportunities as possible. The priority is to prepare our members for their future and the development of their personal and professional leadership skills. Although the Fraternity's programs may change in name and form, their goals and outcomes are still designed with education in mind.

Our Hazing Policy

Delta Tau Delta is a non-hazing Greek organization at the University of Missouri.  This is a policy of which we will never stray. The following is a list of outlawed practices adopted by Gamma Kappa Chapter here at Mizzou, the Arch Chapter, the Undergraduate Council, and Karnea.

--Calisthenics such as sit-ups, pushups, or any other physical abusive exercises.
--Total and or partial nudity at any time.
--The eating or ingestion of any unwanted substance.
--Wearing or carrying of any obscene or physically burdensome or embarrassing article.
--Paddle swats, which also includes the trading of swats with actives or among actives.
--Pushing, shoving, or any other abusive, physical contact directed to pledges.
--Throwing any substance or object on or at a pledge.
--Forcing pledges to drink alcoholic beverages by either threats or peer pressure.
--Rat court, kangaroo court, or other individual interrogation.
--Line-ups of the pledge class.
--Transportation and abandonment of pledges or members.
--Putting pledges in an area which is uncomfortable or confining.
--Any type of personal servitude performed for actives which is demeaning and/or of personal benefit to the active members.
--Wearing feminine apparel of any kind.
--Assigning "Pranks" such as stealing, painting objects, harassing other organizations.
--Members intentionally messing up or trashing the house or rooms for the pledges to clean up.
--Calling or assigning pledges demeaning names.
--Verbally intimidation of pledges.
--Requiring the pledges to have boxing matches, fights, etc., between themselves for actives' enjoyment.

Hazing is the antithesis of brotherhood and is a complete misrepresentation of what fraternity life is all about.  As a values based organization, this behavior contradicts our value of integrity and our mission - Committed to Lives of Excellence.

Our Stance on Alcohol

As you may already know, the University of Missouri has established itself a “dry” campus.  As a member of this campus, Gamma Kappa is therefore compliant with the university’s “No Alcohol” restrictions.  However, Delta Tau Delta recognizes the fact that although your son may not be able to drink in the fraternity, he will still be faced with the issue outside of the jurisdiction of the University.  Therefore, rather than avoid the issue, the Fraternity has chosen a more responsible route.  The Delts Talking About Alcohol (DTAA) program is designed to educate our members about the risks associated with alcohol.

What will Fraternity life be like?

Delta Tau Delta offers many opportunities to have fun.  We work hard and in turn, get to play hard.  From our annual “Delt Recon” camping date party to our “Crescent Cruise” semi-formal at the lake, Delt's like to have a good time.
Delta Tau Delta also offers the opportunity to meet new people in a variety of ways. From Sorority mixers to community service events to other Delts across the world, Delta Tau Delta offers tremendous networking potential.
Delta Tau Delta offers you the chance to develop leadership skills.  Delts offer you the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills through participation and leadership training.
Delta Tau Delta offers you the chance to give back to the community. Delts are involved in many community service events such as “Dirty Delt Ball,” service at the Central Missouri Food Bank, Special Olympics and “Clean-up Columbia.”
If you possess that competitive edge, Delta Tau Delta also participates competitively in all intramurals.  Delta Tau Delta is a Division I house and we pride ourselves on the fact that we will never fall from that category.  Mizzou Delts field competitive teams in football, softball, basketball, volleyball and soccer.  We also participate in bowling, water polo, water basketball and golf.
Actives BadgeRegardless of why you choose to join, Delta Tau Delta guarantees that you will have a great time at Mizzou.  Mizzou Delts are not merely ‘stereotypical frat boys,’ but individuals that maintain a life committed to excellence through honor, integrity, accountability, and brotherhood. During rush, the Mizzou Delts are looking for men with similar goals, aspirations, and attitudes. We are looking for men to spend our college careers with and graduate with as brothers and friends, in mutual admiration of what each has accomplished during his time at Delta Tau Delta and beyond.
